Dogs can smell1 a faint odor2. 

Dogs can sometimes be a nuisance3.

1(臭いを)かぐ ※2かすかな臭い ※3じゃまなもの


おもな助動詞には,意思や可能などを表す一般的な意味のほかに,可能性を表す意味があります。どちらの意味になるかは,文脈などから判断しましょう。


例えば,canには「~できる」「~のことがある」という2つの意味があります。


canが「~できる」の意味のとき

Dogs   can smell   a faint odor.

犬は    かぐことができる    かすかなにおいを

 

canが「~のことがある」の意味のとき

Dogs   can sometimes be a nuisance.

犬は         ときどき迷惑なことがある

be動詞がつくときは,よく可能性を表す意味になります。

 



■応用力をつける
      

I won't go to a place like that again.  

Will she be offended if I don't invite her?

We can give you a single room for thirty dollars.  

Learning English can often be difficult.

Can that woman really be her mother? I think she is too young.

※気を悪くする


I won't go    to a place like that   again.

私は行くつもりはない   そんな場所に               再び

will:~するつもりだ(won'tはwillの短縮形)


Will she be off ended    if I don't invite her?

彼女は気を悪くするだろうか?      もし私が彼女を招待しなければ

will:~だろう


We can give you     a single room   for thirty dollars.

(私たちは)ご用意できます    シングルの部屋を           30ドルで  

can:~できる


Learning English   can often be difficult.

英語を学ぶことは           しばしば難しいことがある

can:~はありうる


Can that woman really be her mother?   I think she is too young.

あの女性は本当に彼女のお母さんなのだろうか?              私は彼女が若すぎると思う   

can:~はありうる(疑問文は「~だろうか」)
