■Unit３で学んだように，to～にはさまざまな意味があります。そのため，次の表現を使い意味をはっきり示すことがあります。　


I hurried 　 in order not to miss 　 the last train.

私は急いだ　　　　　　 乗り過ごさないように　　　　　　 　　 最後の列車に

※in order not to～のかわりにnot to missだけでも同じ意味になります。

■整理 to～を応用した表現    


in order to～，so as to～： ～するために＜目的＞

…， only to～： （…しかし結局）～だけだった＜結果＞

…， never to～： （…しかし結局）～しなかった＜結果＞

③ The boys went to the battle field，　 never to come back.

若者たちは戦場に出かけた　　         　　　　    　　 　　 （しかし結局）帰ってこなかった

■too…to～（とても…なので～できない），…enough to～（とても…なので～できる）という意味になります。

④ The book is too hard  　for me 　 to understand.

この本はとても難しい　     　　　   　  　 私が 　　　　  理解するには　 （→難しくて理解できない）

※for～は，不定詞to～の意味上の主語を表しています（Unit05参照）。

　 The book is easy enough 　 for me 　 to understand.

　　  この本はとてもかんたんだ 　　  　　　　 　       私が   　　　　  理解するには　 （→かんたんで理解できる）

※enough は，easy をうしろから修飾します。


⑤ Our garden is too small 　 for us 　 to play catch.

庭はとてもせまい　　　  　　　　　     　      私たちが  　　キャッチボールをするには


⑥ He doesn't have enough sense 　 to realize his mistakes.

　　彼は十分な分別がない　　　　   　　　　       　　　　　　  　 自分のあやまちに気付く
