■43.大過去形① 大過去形の考え方


The boy was an orphan※. 　His parents had died two years ago.

※孤児


■英語では，過去のさらに過去の出来事は大過去形で表します。


The boy was an orphan.   His parents had died two years ago.

少年は孤児だった（過去形）　　　　       両親は２年前に亡くなっていた（大過去形）


大過去形のかたちは過去完了形と同じで，＜had＋過去分詞＞です。どちらの意味になるかは，文脈などから判断しましょう。　　


POINT 「少年は孤児だった」は過去形，「両親が亡くなった」のはそれより前のことなので大過去形で表します。大過去形も完了形と同じく日本語にない時制です。

① I lost a watch.　 My father had bought it before for me.

② I recognized※1 you at once, as I had seen you before.　

③ She sent me a picture that she had taken before.　　　　　

④ She bought the house after her husband had died.

⑤ The train had pulled out※2 when we arrived at the station.

※1認識した ※2pull out：出発する

私は時計をなくした  　　   （それは）父が以前に買ってくれた（ものだった）

※「なくした（lost）」は過去，それより前の「買ってくれた（had bought）」は大過去。


② I recognized you at once， as I had seen you before.

私はすぐにあなただとわかった　       　　　 前に会ったことがあったので

※「わかった（recognized）」は過去，それより前の「会った（had seen）」は大過去。


③ She sent me  　a picture that she had taken before.

彼女は私に送ってくれた  　　　  彼女が以前撮った写真を

※「送ってくれた（sent）」は過去，それより前の「撮った（had taken）」は大過去。


④ She bought the house after 　 her husband had died.

彼女はその家を買った　               　　　　　　　　　　      夫が亡くなったあと

※「買った（bought）」は過去，それより前の「亡くなった（had died）」は大過去。


⑤ The train had pulled out 　 when we arrived at the station.

列車は出てしまっていた           　　　　　　　　　　　  　 私たちが駅に着いたとき

※「着いた（arrived）」は過去，それより前の「出ていた（had pulled out）」は大過去。

 


■ココに注意！ 大過去形と過去完了形のちがい

大過去形と過去完了形はどちらも＜ had ＋過去分詞＞ですが，どちらの意味になるか区別する必要がない場合もあります。

I lent him a book which I had read.　読んだ本を，私は彼に貸した

●〈had read〉の意味のとらえ方…

→「本を貸した」より「本を読んだ」を前のことととらえれば大過去

→「本を貸した」とき「すでに本を読んでしまっていた」ととらえれば過去完了
