■48.比較の基本表現② ~er,~est



The climate of Italy is milder than that of England.  

February is the shortest of all months.   

※気候 


比較表現は,形容詞・副詞を変化させて表されます。~er(比較級)は「より~」,~est(最上級)は「最も~」という意味になります。

 

■~er than …:…より~だ <比較級>

The climate of Italy   is milder than   that of England.

イタリアの気候は                ~よりおだやかだ     イギリスのそれ(気候)

 

the ~est:最も~だ <最上級>

February   is the shortest   of all months.

2月は               最も短い         すべての月の中で

注意 副詞では,最上級のtheを省略することがあります。

He runs fastest in the world. 

彼は世界で最も速く走る

 



■応用力をつける
      

The strongest man in the world could not lift up this rock.

The population of Tokyo is much larger than that of Paris.  

The bottom of the Mariana trench1 is several kilometers deeper than the surrounding2 sea floor.

The actual size of the plane would be ten times bigger than that of the model.    

He is one of the greatest painters who have ever lived in Japan.

couldは過去ではなく,canのひかえめな意味を表しています(Unit33参照)。


The population of Tokyo   is much larger   than that of Paris.

東京の人口は                         ずっと多い            パリのそれ(人口)より

muchは比較級の意味を強めています。


The bottom of the Mariana trench   is several kilometers deeper than

マリアナ海峡の底は                                        数キロメートル深い

wouldは過去ではなく,willのひかえめな意味を表しています(Unit33参照)。

one of+最上級:最も~な一人(一つ)だ

 


We learn from our failures rather than from our successes.

Although he only joined the firm this year, he is senior to me already.

rather(むしろ~)はさまざまな表現で使われ,比較級の意味を表します。

We learn from our failures rather than from our successes.

 私たちはむしろ失敗から学ぶ                        成功より

A rather than B:B よりむしろA  

 

■「~より」の意味を表すのに,that~のかわりにto~が使われることもあります。

Although he only joined the firm this year, he is senior to me already.

     彼は今年会社に入ったばかりだが                              彼はすでに私より(役職が)上だ

be senior to~:~より(年齢,役職などが)上だ

 

■比較表現には,不規則変化するものもあります。

Show me   the least expensive skateboard  in this shop.

私に見せてください     最も安いスケートボードを                  この店で

least:few(少ない)の最上級


We can find   more amusements   in big cities   than in small towns.

見つけることができる      多くの娯楽を             大きな都市では          小さな町より

more:many(多くの)の比較級


My grandfather was seriously ill last month, but he is much better now.

祖父は先月には深刻な状態だった                                しかし  今ではかなりよくなった

better:good(よい)の比較級


 


■整理 比較級・最上級を強めたり弱めたりする表現

比較級(~er・move~),最上級(~est・most~)を強めたり弱めたりする表現があります。

much,far: ずっと(比較級を強める)

much,very,by far: まさに(最上級を強める)

a little,a bit: 少しだけ(比較級を弱める)

 

■整理 rather を使った表現

ratherは「(~より)むしろ」という意味の副詞ですが,次のように比較級の意味を表します。

A rather than B(rather A than B) B よりむしろA

would rather do(than do): (ーするより)むしろ~したい

would rather(that)~: むしろ~だとよいのに   thatのあとには文がきます。

 

■整理 than ではなくto をとる比較級の表現

-orで終わる形容詞にはラテン語由来のものが多いですが,この形容詞の比較級では,「~より」の意味を表すのにthan~のかわりにto~が使われます。

be senior to~: ~より(年齢,役職などが)上だ

be junior to~: ~より(年齢,役職などが)下だ

prefer A to B B よりA が好きだ

be superior to~: ~より優れている

be inferior to~: ~より劣っている

 


■整理 不規則変化する形容詞・副詞

   比較表現では,形容詞や副詞に~er(more),~est(most)をつけますが,次のように不規則変化するものもあります。
