■５．WRITING TRAINING AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS（小学校での書き方の学習）

In almost all elementary schools※1 in America, students begin to learn writing around third grade※2. The first steps of writing are book reports, which are summaries of books. Students choose and read a book and write what it was about. The most basic book report is a few sentences which describe※3 the story.

 アメリカのほとんどの小学校では，児童は3年生くらいのときに書くことを習い始めます。最初のステップはブックレポートで，これは本の要約です。児童は自分で選んだ本を読み，書かれていることをまとめます。最もかんたんなブックレポートは本の内容を数行の文でまとめたものです。
■BOOK REPORT■
The first Thanksgiving※1 happened in November. The winter was so cold in America and the Pilgrims※2, who were from England, didn't know what to do. The Indians taught them how to grow corn and other food. From then, they were able to live on their own.

 ■ブックレポート■
最初の感謝祭は11月に行われました。その冬，アメリカはたいへん寒く，イギリスから来た清教徒たちは何をしたらよいかわかりませんでした。インディアンは彼らにトウモロコシや他の作物をどのように育てたらよいか教えました。こうして，清教徒たちは自分たちで生き永らえることができたのです。
Later on, the book report requires some questions. They are called the journalistic questions, which are the way used to explain a news story.
“Who and what is the report about?”
“Where and when does the report take place?”
“Why did the things in the report happen?”

 次に，ブックレポートをもとにしたいくつかの質問がされます。これは「報道的な質問」と呼ばれ，ニュース記事を説明するときに使われる方法です。
｢レポートは，だれについて，そして何について述べていますか？｣
｢レポートは，どこの，そしていつの出来事ですか？｣
｢レポートの出来事は，なぜ起こったのですか。｣
These answers are sometimes very similar※1 to the simpler book report, but they have a little more detail※2 in them. After students get used to※3 answering these questions, they begin to write questions of their own, which makes them practice thinking about the background of the story.
“Why did the Pilgrims want to leave England?”
“When did the Indians first live in America? ”
“How did the Indians learn to grow the food?”

 これらの答えはブックレポートと似たものになることが多いですが，それぞれの答えではより詳細が述べられています。児童がこれらの質問にすらすら答えられるようになると， 児童自身が疑問に思ったことを書きます。これは事件の背景にあるものを考える訓練になります。
｢清教徒がイギリスをはなれたいと思ったのはなぜですか？｣
｢インディアンがアメリカに住み始めたのはいつですか？｣
｢インディアンはどのように作物の育て方を学びましたか？｣
After these questions are practiced, then the book reports become more and more detailed, which include more thoughts.

 これらの質問にすらすら答えられるようになると，ブックレポートはより細かな内容のものになり，幅広い考えをふくむようになります。
