I know that he drives the car.

Do you know whether he drives the car?


主語と動詞のある文の前にthatやwhether,if がつくと,ひとまとまりの名詞のはたらきをします。


<that+文>~ということ

I know    that he drives the car.
  私は知っている   彼がその車を運転するということを
   thatはよく省略されます

 

■<whether(if)+文>~かどうか(ということ)

Do you know    whether(if) he drives the car?
  あなたは知っていますか?       彼がその車を運転するかどうか

 

POINT that~,whether(if)~のどちらもふつうの名詞と同じように,主語や目的語,補語などに幅広く使われます。

 



■応用力をつける
      

We are apt1 to think that traffic accidents will happen to others, but not to ourselves.

This coat is quite satisfactory2, except the sleeves3 are too short for me.

It is clear that the old system doesn't work anymore.

I think it probable4 she started the rumor.

that~は「~ということ」という意味の名詞のまとまりになります。

We are apt to think   that traffic accidents will happen to others,

私たちは考えがちだ                      交通事故は他人には起こる(と)

but not to ourselves.

しかし 自分たちには起こらない(と)

このコートは まったく申し分ない               ~をのぞけば              袖が私には短すぎること

※前置詞のあとにくるのは名詞だけですが,that~も前置詞のあとにきます。

itは仮の主語で,実際の主語はthat~。


I think   it probable   that) she started the rumor.

私は思う      ありうる(と)         彼女がそのうわさを流したこと(は)

itは仮の目的語で,実際の目的語はthat~。

 


The question is whether the meeting will be held.

It is unknown whether there is life on the planet or not.   

It is no difference to me whether you know the truth or not.

There remains the question whether she will agree with our plan.

The doctor felt my arm to see if the bone was broken.

 

whether(if)~は「~かどうか(ということ)」という意味の名詞のまとまりになります。

The question is   whether the meeting will be held.

問題は                      ミーティングが行われるかどうか(ということ)だ


It is unknown   whether there is life on the planet or not.

わからない                    その惑星に生物がいるかどうか(は)


It is no difference   to me   whether you know the truth or not.

ちがいはない               私にとって         あなたが事実を知っているかどうか(は)

(→あなたが事実を知っているかどうかは,私には関係ない)

※⑥⑦ itは仮の主語で,実際の主語はwhether~。


There remains the question   whether she will agree with our plan.

疑問が残っている                              彼女が私たちのプランに賛成するかどうか(という)


The doctor felt my arm   to see  ifwhether   the bone was broken.

医者は私の腕にふれた                    ~かどうかみるために          骨が折れている

 


I was glad that he was alive.

I was surprised that you had the guts1 to contradict2 the boss.

There is no hope that our team will win the race.    

I could not understand the fact that she was angry.    

He was such a naive boy that he believed the rumor3.

■<that+文>は,「~(ということ)がうれしい」のように感情の原因を表すことも

あります。/SPAN>

I was glad    that he was alive.

私はうれしかった     彼が生きていたことが

※次のように,to不定詞でもほぼ同じ意味を表すことができます(Unit03参照)。

I was glad    to hear (that) he was alive.

私はうれしかった      彼が生きていたことを聞いて


I was surprised    that you had the guts    to contradict the boss.

私はおどろいた             あなたに勇気があることに              上司に反論する

■<that+文>は直前の名詞を補足することもあります(同格のthat)。

There is no hope   that our team will win the race.

望みはない                    私たちのチームがレースに勝つ


I could not understand    the fact    that she was angry.

私は理解できなかった                   事実を             彼女が怒った


He was such a naive boy   that he believed the rumor.

彼は世間知らずの少年だった    そのうわさを信じるような (→彼は世間知らずの少年だったので,そのうわさを信じた)


We haven't found evidence yet   that they are innocent.

私たちはまだ証拠を発見できていない               彼らが無実であるという
