■８.動詞-ing② ｢～している｣となる


① Do you know that animal sleeping under the tree?　 　　

② The lesser panda is sleeping under the tree.　


動詞＋ing は「～している」という意味になり，次の2つのはたらきをします。


■名詞をおもにうしろから修飾します。

① Do you know  　 that animal  　sleeping under the tree?　　　　　　　　　　　　　
　　あなたは知っていますか？　　　あの動物を 　　　　　　木の下で眠っている

注意 ～ingが1語のときは，前から名詞を修飾します（sleeping animal）。

 

■be動詞のあとにおかれ，進行中の動作を表します（進行形）。

② The lesser panda 　 is sleeping  　under the tree.

レッサーパンダは　    　 　　　  　眠っている　　  　　     木の下で

POINT ～ingは名詞を修飾したりbe動詞の補語になりますが，これは形容詞のはたらきと同じです。

① Growing boys usually have larger appetites※1 than their parents.　

② New Zealand looks like little islands floating※2 in giant sea from space.　

③ I didn't hear the doorbell when she arrived, because I was taking a shower.　

④ Come and see us if you are passing※3 through Boston.

⑤ She is being very lazy this morning. She doesn't usually behave※4 like that.

⑥ The audience kept applauding※5 long after the curtain came down.　　　　

※1食欲 ※2float：浮く ※3pass through：通りかかる ※4ふるまう ※5applaud：拍手する


■～ing（～している）は名詞をおもにうしろから修飾します。

① Growing boys 　　　 usually have larger appetites  　than their parents.

育っている（育ち盛りの）少年は　   　たいてい旺盛な食欲がある　 　　　　 　　　　　　   両親よりも

※～ingが1語のときは，形容詞のように前から名詞を修飾します。


② New Zealand looks 　 like little islands floating in giant sea  　from space.

ニュージーランドは見える　 　　　　　  巨大な海に浮いている小さな島のように　               宇宙から（見ると）

 

■～ing（～している）はbe動詞のあとにおかれ，進行中の動作を表します（進行形）。

③ I didn't hear the doorbell  　when she arrived， because I was taking a shower.

　　 　私はドアベルが聞こえなかった　     　  　　　  彼女が来たとき　　   　　      シャワーを浴びていたので


④ Come and see us  　　if you are passing through Boston.

私たちに会いに来てください　　　　　　  もしあなたがボストンを訪れるなら

　  ※現在進行形は近い未来の確定した予定を表すこともあります。


⑤ She is being very lazy  　this morning.  　She doesn't usually behave like that.

彼女は怠けてばかりいる　　　   　　　       今朝は　     　　　　    いつもはそのようなふるまいをしないのだが

　  ※be動詞の文は進行形にしませんが，一時的な状態を強調するときはすることもあります。


⑥ The audience kept applauding long  　　after the curtain came down.

　　　  観客は拍手をし続けた　　　　 　　　　　          　　 　　   　　　　        幕が下がったあとも

　 　※be動詞のかわりにkeepが使われ，「～している」の意味を強調しています。
