She is not more active than I.    

She is no more active than I.


比較級の表現(~er,more~)にnot,no がつくことがあります。not,no はどちらも否定語ですが,意味はまったくちがうので注意しましょう。

 

not:ふつうの否定語で「~でない」という意味

She is not more active  than I.

彼女は活動的ではない            私より

 

no(ゼロの~):「同じく~でない」という意味

She is no more active  than I.

彼女は  同じく活動的ではない     私と    (→彼女は私と同じく活動的でない)

 



■応用力をつける
      

Some species1 of dinosaurs2 were not bigger than dogs.

I'm not a genius3, and you are no more a genius than I am.

I think video games are no more harmful4 than books or magazines.

Works is no more the object5 of life than play6 is.     

A whale7 is no more a fish than a horse is.

any(どんな~)は強調のために使われています。

lessには否定の意味があり,not less,no lessなど否定語が重なると肯定の意味になります。noがつくと「差がゼロ→同じ」という意味になることに注意しましょう。

not less~ than A:Aより~だ(more ~(~ er)than A と同じ意味)

■数字の前にnot,noがつくことがあります。noがつくと「差がゼロ→同じ」という意味になることに注意しましょう。

彼はせいぜい25歳だ                                             しかし 彼には少なくとも3人の子供がいる

not more than~:多くとも~,せいぜい~   not less than~:少なくとも~


I have no more than 1000 yen, but my brother has no less than 10000 yen.

私は1000円しか持っていない                         しかし  兄(弟)は1万円も持っている

no more than~:ちょうど~しか(少ない感じ)  no less than~:ちょうど~も(多い感じ)


Not less than five persons   were injured   in the accident.

少なくとも5人の人が                              負傷した               事故で

not less than~:少なくとも~


He makes   no less than one million yen   a month.

彼は稼いでいる            ちょうど100万円も                       月に

no less than~:ちょうど~も(多い感じ)

 


■ココに注意! not less, no less のちがい

lessはlittle(小さい)の比較級で,否定の意味があります。

not less: 否定語が重なるため肯定の意味になります。

Truth is  not less strange  than fiction.

事実は            不思議だ               小説より

no less: noに「差がゼロ→同じ」という意味があるため,「同じく~だ」という意味になります

事実は         同じく不思議だ           小説と 

 

■整理 数字の前にnot,noがつくとき

not: ふつうの否定語で「~ではない」という意味になります。

not more than 1000 yen 多くとも1000円

not less than 1000 yen 少なくとも1000円


no(ゼロの~): 「差がゼロ→同じ」という意味になります。

no more than 1000 yenちょうど1000円しか

no less than 1000 yen ちょうど1000円も
