接続詞はおもに文と文をつなぐことばです。接続詞には,日本語と同じ順で文と文をつなぐものと,逆の順でつなぐものがあります。
■so,forは日本語と同じ順で文と文をつなぎます(等位接続詞)。
① The boy was very tired, so he soon fell asleep.
少年はとても疲れていた そこで 彼はすぐに寝てしまった
② The boy fell asleep, for he was very tired.
少年はすぐに寝てしまった というのは 彼はとても疲れていた(からだ)
※soは結果,forは理由を表します。接続詞以外にも,soには「そのように」「とても」,forには「~のために」「~のあいだ」などさまざまな意味があります。

■ココに注意! 英語の2種類の接続詞
接続詞は文のつなぎ方から2つのタイプに分けられます。 (※次の2つの文はほぼ同じ意味になります)
