■25.関係詞⑤ why，how


① Do you know the reason why he worked?

② This is how we solved the problem.

 

「理由」にはwhy，「方法」にはhow が使われます。


■whyはreason，cause を修飾し，「なぜ～」と理由を表します。　

① Do you know   　　 the reason 　 why he worked?

あなたは知っていますか？　　　 理由(を) 　　　 （なぜ）彼がはたらいていた（か）　 （→彼がはたらいていた理由）

※reason，whyはどちらかがよく省略されます。

 

■howは修飾する名詞なしで単独で使われ，「どのように～」と方法を表します。

② This is  　　 how 　　 we solved the problem.

これが～だ  　どのように　　　　私たちがその問題を解いた（か）　 （→私たちがその問題を解いた方法）

注意 howのかわりにthe wayを使ってもほぼ同じ意味になります。

（②＝This is the way we solved the problem.）

理由がある　       　　   　　　　　　　 　 （なぜ）この映画が広く受け入られている　


③ The reason （why） I stayed in Paris for one week  was that I fell ill during my trip.

理由　     　    （なぜ）私はパリに1週間とどまった　      　　　　　             （は）私が旅行中に病気になった（からだ）


④ The reason (why) I like the book is that it　 is a science text 　　in the form of a fantasy novel.

理由   　   　　    （なぜ）私がその本が好き 　　　  （は）それが科学のテキストだからだ  　～空想小説のかたちをした  


⑤ Could you tell me　　　  how I can get the discount?

私に教えてくれませんか？　　  どのように私は割引を受けることができるのか


⑥ I cooked the food 　（which） he liked  the way he liked it.

私は食事をつくった 　 　（それを）彼は好きだ　 彼が好きな方法で（→私は彼が好きな料理を彼が好きな方法でつくった）
